Accessing CDS
Accessing CDS (Customs Declaration Service)
To manage UK import and export declarations, businesses must access the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) - HMRC’s digital platform replacing CHIEF. CDS is essential for traders, freight forwarders, and customs brokers who need to submit accurate customs declarations and comply with UK trade regulations.
How to Access CDS:
Register for an EORI Number – Every business trading internationally must have an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number linked to their Government Gateway account.
Set Up CDS Access – Log in via the HMRC portal and enrol for CDS services. This step ensures your business can submit declarations electronically.
Use CDS-Compatible Customs Software – HMRC requires declarations to be submitted through approved customs declaration software. These solutions integrate with CDS, enabling automation, real-time data exchange, and compliance with UK customs rules.
Authorise Agents – If you use a customs broker or freight forwarder, grant them access through your CDS account.
Why Integration Matters:
Connecting CDS with customs management software streamlines workflows, reduces manual errors, and speeds up clearance. Businesses handling high-volume trade benefit from automation and accurate duty/tax calculations.
Accessing CDS is not just about compliance—it’s about efficiency. Investing in CDS-ready customs software ensures smooth operations and avoids costly delays in global trade.
